Fitness for kids is part of the government's health programme initiative and there is no better way to give your child a really great fun workout than introducing them to tennis. Junior coaching at the Belfast Boat Club Tennis Academy is run to the highest professional levels with excellent facilities.

Our coaching follows the latest ITF (International Tennis Federation) guidelines and practices. The Tennis 10s programme is run for players aged 10 and under and includes red (8 and under), orange (8 & 9 years old) and green (9 & 10 years old) court tennis.

Players aged 11 - 18 take part in lessons focused on the ITFs Play and Stay model which allows beginner players to start playing tennis straight away and where tennis technique is taught alongside the tactical and physical aspects. Squads are available for all ages and abilites.

All classes are run in the dome during the winter months from September - March.

All juniors at the Academy benefit from getting 2 sessions per week for the price of 1! For full details please select the age group you are interested in from the options below:

 

Red Tennis - Under 8s

Red Tennis is for players aged 4 to 8. Our Red Tennis programme is called Bounce Club. The children use softer tennis balls, smaller rackets and a smaller court. Red tennis court

What age is Red Tennis for?

Red tennis (Bounce Club) is for players aged 8 and under

What ball is used?

A larger red ball is used which is 75% slower than a full court yellow ball

What size court is it played on?Red tennis balls

The court size is 11m x 5.5m and the net is 0.8m high

What racket should be used?

A shorter racket on 17" - 23" should be used depending on the size and strength of the player. Rackets can be borrowed for the first week and then rackets are available to purchase from the coaches.

When is it on?

Bounce club players do one 45 minute session out of: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday at 3.15pm and they also have a FREE session of fun games on Saturday morning at 9.15am. So thats 2 x 45 minute sessions for the cost of 1!

Orange Tennis - 8 to 9 Years

Orange Tennis is for players aged 8 and 9 and is the next progression after Red court tennis.

What age is Orange Tennis for?

Orange tennis is for players aged 8 and 9

What ball is used?

An orange ball is used which is 50% slower than a full court yellow ball

What size court is it played on?

The court size is 18m x 6.5m

What racket should be used?

A shorter racket on 23" - 25" should be used depending on the size and strength of the player. Rackets can be borrowed for the first week and then rackets are available to purchase from the coaches.

When is it on?

Orange squad players have a 1 hour long session during the week and they also have a FREE session of games & matchplay on Saturday morning at 10am. So thats 2 x 1 hour sessions for the cost of 1!

Green Tennis - 10 years

Green Tennis is for players aged 9 and 10 and is the next progression after Orange court tennis.

What age is Green Tennis for?

Green tennis is for players aged 9 and 10

What ball is used?

A green ball is used which is 25% slower than a full court yellow ball

What size court is it played on?

Green tennis is played on a full tennis court

What racket should be used?

A bigger racket of 25" - 26" should be used depending on the size and strength of the player. Rackets can be borrowed for the first week and then rackets are available to purchase from the coaches.

When is it on?

Green squad player have 1 hour long session during the week and they also have a FREE session of games & matchplay on Saturday morning at 10am. So thats 2 x 1 hour sessions for the cost of 1!

Yellow Tennis - 11 to 18 years

Yellow Tennis is the final progression after red, orange and green tennis.

What age is Yellow Tennis for?

Yellow tennis is for players aged 11+

What ball is used?

A normal yellow ball is used

What size court is it played on?

Yellow tennis is played on a full tennis court

What racket should be used?

A racket of 25" - 26" or a full size 27" racket should be used depending on the size and strength of the player. Rackets can be borrowed for the first few weeks if needed..

When is it on?

Yellow squad player have 1 hour long session during the week and they also have a FREE session of games & matchplay on Saturday morning at 11am. So thats 2 x 1 hour sessions for the cost of 1!

PERFORMANCE SQUADS

Performance squads are for Junior members who have the potential to play at Ulster or National level. Over the years members of the Academy performance squads have gone on to play for Ulster and Ireland at all age groups.

Performance squads train for 3 x 2 hour sessions per week and the training includes:

  • Structured technical, tactical and physical programs
  • Physical testing and progress tracking
  • Video Analysis
  • Psychological training
  • Regular player profiles
  • Match charting and analysis

Performance squads are run at Under 8, Under 9, Under 10, Under 12 and Under 18 age groups. These squads are by invitation only and if you would like more information please contact Ben Neal.

Performance squads are only open to members of Belfast Boat Club and any non-members who are invited to join must join the club as well.
